Paint like John Constable
In this course, we will learn some of the techniques which Constable would have used to colour and compose his paintings. Although for convenience, we will use acrylic paint, the principles will apply to how the old masters worked in oils. Constable did his major canvases in the studio, and so, throughout the three-week course, we will work towards completing a single canvas, based upon assembled drawings or photographs of Colchester and the surrounding countryside. Students are invited to collect their own source material for this, or else to use images provided in the class.
We will learn about John Constable’s life and his approach to painting, and we will learn about his contemporaries and his influence on succeeding generations of painters. This is an opportunity to work towards producing a single, larger painting over a three-week period.
